Good Health Begins with Better Sleep (& Nightly CBD)
Out of all the wellness routines science says you should implement ASAP, a good night’s sleep is one of the most powerful. According to NIH Expert Michael Twery, getting adequate sleep “affects almost every tissue in our bodies,”1 and has a profound impact on our:
- Growth and stress hormones
- Immune systems
- Cardiovascular systems
- Blood pressure
- Appetite/Body weight1
This is because while you sleep, your body enters a self-repair mode that is necessary for carrying out almost all daily functions.1 Despite this, nearly 80 percent of Americans suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia at least once per week.2
Fortunately, preliminary research shows CBD offers therapeutic potential to treat insomnia related to REM sleep behavior disorder,3 which allows users to avoid daytime sleepiness. In contrast, psychoactive THC may aid in decreasing sleep latency, or how long it takes to fall asleep, but could have long-term negative consequences on your sleep cycle.3
There are of course many potential physical and psychological disturbances at the root of sleep disorders, but anxiety and the inability to “turn off” your thoughts may be to blame for some sleep-deprived adults. Clinical Professor and Neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, M.D., says CBD’s ability to manage anxiety and pain is likely the reason it also treats insomnia, and the compound is a “safe, non-habit forming alternative” to prescription sleep remedies.2 Other research suggests the endocannabinoid system (more about that here) may play a role in regulating circadian rhythms.4
For those still skeptical about CBD’s ability to help them sleep longer, more peaceful nights, one study gave a numerical value to CBD’s benefits. Following 409 study participants’ average ranking of insomnia severity as 6.6 on a 10-point scale, participants then recorded their scores after using CBD. The results? The average insomnia severity score decreased to 2.2.5
Whether you define your sleep habits as moderate or you don’t remember the last time you got the recommended eight hours, CBD holds the potential to improve a daily act that should be mindless. Being well-rested is a critical component of a healthy lifestyle, not an optional treat or afterthought to diet and exercise.
Farmulated CBD offers an assortment of oils, capsules, and edibles to improve your nighttime routine. Remember, better sleep = better overall health. We look forward to assisting you on your natural wellness journey, even if that means just a little more shuteye!
